Film Festival Submission Strategy

Submitting a movie to film festivals is a lot like applying to college: there are many, many options and it can be very, very expensive. And, in the end, there are no guarantees.
There are thousands of film festivals around the world and some charge over $75 merely to take your film into consideration. This can add up fast. Thus, filmmakers should be wise and do their research first, beginning with an honest assessment of their film.
Roberta Munroe programmed short films at The Sundance Film Festival from 2001 – 2006. She now is the president and senior consultant of a Los Angeles based independent filmmaker company, RMM Film Consulting. Ms. Munroe has viewed over 15,000 short films!

Rather than blindly submitting a film to myriad festivals, it is best to scrutinize festivals and find good matches for your film. Why waste time and money on a festival your film is not compatible with? Like applying to college, do your research and talk to others about their experiences.
