Betty White Clobbers Warhol’s 15 Minutes!
1 Feb
Andy Warhol’s proverbial 15 minutes of fame has rung true for many people. It seems everyday someone new finds fame as quickly as they lose it. A few, however, remain in the spotlight for quite some time, parlaying their 15 minutes into 15 weeks, 15 years, even a lifetime.
Betty White is such a person. Not only did she host SNL this season at the age of 88, she recently won the Screen Actors Guild “Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series” award (her first!). And what makes Ms. White’s reclaim to fame so interesting is the way in which it can be pinpointed.
Exactly a year ago, Ms. White appeared in a Snickers Super Bowl commercial. Although many celebrities appear in Super Bowl commercials, this was memorable. Ms. White, at her golden age, gets tackled hard in a muddy football game, then talks trash to the quarterback. The commercial is not only hilarious, but features Ms. White in a brazen, yet likable way.
As an aspiring filmmaker, I often wonder how difficult it will be to find and maintain success. In addition to working hard and staying productive, Ms. White’s recent rebirth has taught me that I need to remain fresh and relevant. Without sacrificing my art and ideals, I can continue to reinvent myself and hopefully extend my 15 minutes into a lifetime!
