The “Interchange of Creation”

Film director Elia Kazan’s autobiography, Elia Kazan: A Life, has been an immense joy to read. At 825 pages, the book is colossal in scope and quite the commitment; however, after reading only 183 pages thus far, I feel I’ve already gained a ton of insight into art, relationships and life in general. Mr. Kazan does not hold back and candidly shares not only his victories, but his regrets and failures as well.
In addition, he openly discusses his opinions on various film and theatre professionals he worked with, such as stage director Harold Clurman. Take a look at this section of Mr. Kazan’s thoughts on Mr. Clurman:

In describing Mr. Clurman’s approach to creation, Mr. Kazan uses words like encouragement, good-hearted, and companionship. No doubt, Mr. Clurman loved working on plays and loved the people he worked with. This must have resulted in an overall wonderful experience for those who collaborated with him.
There are much more important things in life than my film and, like Harold Clurman, I eagerly want to be encouraging and good-hearted toward all my collaborators. In the end, it’s not about the film; it’s about the relationships and experience.

I love the phrase – “interchange of creation” – such a beautiful way to show what creatives are a part of.
